Longing

There’s an old familiar longing,

For a place, a time, a friend,

I can’t seek it though it sought me,

For I know it’s a dead end.

The answers to the questions,

Lie in time that is not mine,

But I doubt myself and cry out loud,

You know that I am blind

I look into the mirror

And I see the distant trace

Of a soul without a lover

Of a life without the grace

And I look upon my body,

And I know where it has been,

And it knows it cannot find that love,

In the arms of men

There’s an old familiar longing,

But it’s older than my life,

And I cannot satisfy the loss,

That cuts me like a knife

But it’s not the loneliness of old,

That brings me to this place,

It’s the knowing I am empty,

Til I feel your warm embrace.
